WITH MANY stores carrying their respective versions of the recyclable shopping bag, it seems the lightweight tote is top pick when it comes to “green” accessories.
Updating their own line of shopping bags is SM Supermalls, which recently came out with four new Eco Bags—Flow, Breathe, Renew and Spark. The bags were launched Aug. 6 at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong.
Each bag corresponds to advocacies supported by SM—Breathe clean air once again; Spark a revolution in sustainable energy use; Renew earth by reducing waste; and make waters Flow with life.
The bags are also SM’s way of involving the youth to “adopt the lifestyle of recycling.” Fashioned with a long extra strap, the Eco Bag can be carried body bag-style, aside from the usual handbag and shoulder bag-style.
The bags are spruced with artworks by Manuel Baldemor (also the designer of SM’s first line of recyclable bags, the Green Bag), and come in four colors—light blue, dark blue, cream and orange. The main material is polypropylene, which is durable (used on a weekly basis, it can last for two years), recyclable, nontoxic and nonreactive to human skin.
“It’s a design that’s more youth-oriented,” said SM Supermalls president Annie Garcia. “We want to address the youth… [to] push for change for all future generations to come.”
‘Heal the planet’
Other guests at the launch were Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos, former Environment Secretary Elisa Gozun, Luntiang Pilipinas founder Sen. Loren Legarda and NGO officials. All lauded SM’s efforts to raise awareness on environmental issues and initiate in their customers a sense of responsibility toward their surroundings.
“We need to heal the planet,” said Gozun. “Let’s remember that all the decisions we make now will have an effect on all our tomorrows.”
Students of all levels from different schools were also at the launch, most of whom played a key role in setting up the event—some created the physical setup, which “greenified” Megamall’s activity center; others showcased interpretative performances representing each of the four Eco Bags. The Mandaluyong Children’s Choir provided the event’s finale.
The Eco Bags are among SM Supermalls’ projects under the SM Cares program, which sponsors monthly recycling drives, launched the first free Green Film Festival, and brought in former US Vice President Al Gore to talk about his award-winning documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.”
“The future is in the bag,” said Garcia. “Let’s all do our share in making a difference.”
